Heating Repair in Northern New Jersey

New Jersey winters don’t negotiate. When your heat stops working in January, you need it fixed — and you need someone who diagnoses the actual problem instead of swapping parts until something sticks. AGR HVAC repairs residential furnaces and heating systems across Morris, Sussex, Warren, Passaic, and Essex counties.

Common Heating Problems We Fix

Most no-heat calls come down to a short list: a failed ignitor or pilot assembly, a worn blower motor, a cracked or dirty burner, a thermostat that’s lost calibration, a clogged air filter, or electrical issues like a failed control board. You often get a warning first — odd cycling, longer warm-up times, new noises, or climbing fuel usage. Don’t wait for a cold night to find out what it was.

What to Check Before You Call

A few quick checks can save you a service visit. Make sure the thermostat is set to heat and the temperature is set above the room temperature. Check that the furnace switch (it looks like a regular light switch, usually on the wall near the unit) is on. Look at the air filter — if it’s packed with dust, replace it. Check your breaker panel for a tripped breaker. If the system still won’t run after those, it’s time to call — don’t keep resetting things hoping for a different result.

What a Repair Visit Involves

We start at the thermostat and work through the system: controls, ignition, burners, heat exchanger (visually, where accessible), blower assembly, filter, and electrical components. Once we find the failure, we explain it in plain terms, quote the repair before touching anything, and fix it with your approval. If we spot something else worn and likely to fail soon, we’ll mention it so you can decide — not as a surprise add-on later.

When Repair Stops Being Worth It

Furnaces typically last 15–20 years. If yours is in that range and needs a major repair — a heat exchanger, a control board on an obsolete model — we’ll do the honest math with you: the cost of the repair against the remaining life of the system. Sometimes the right answer is fixing it and getting five more years. Sometimes it’s not. Either way, you’ll hear it straight.

Our Hours

Our hours are 9–5. If your heat goes out, call us during business hours and we’ll get you on the schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions

My heat won’t turn on at all. What should I do? Check the thermostat setting, the furnace switch, the filter, and the breaker — those solve a surprising number of no-heat calls. If everything looks right and it still won’t run, call us during business hours.

There’s a strange smell when the heat first kicks on. Is that normal? A brief dusty smell at the start of heating season is common — it’s dust burning off the heat exchanger. But a persistent burning, electrical, or rotten-egg smell is not normal. For anything involving gas odor, leave the house and call your gas utility first.

Some rooms are much colder than others. Can that be fixed? Often, yes. It can be a ductwork issue, a damper problem, poor insulation in certain rooms, or an undersized or aging system. A visit lets us figure out which one you’re dealing with.

How long do furnaces usually last? Most last 15–20 years with reasonable care. Regular filter changes and periodic checkups are what separate the systems that make 20 from the ones that die at 12.
