Not every home has ductwork — and not every room is comfortable with the system the house already has. Ductless mini-splits solve both problems: they heat and cool individual rooms or zones without a single duct, and modern heat-pump technology makes them genuinely practical in New Jersey’s climate. AGR HVAC installs ductless mini-split and heat pump systems across Morris, Sussex, Warren, Passaic, and Essex counties.
Where Ductless Makes Sense
The classic candidates: older homes that were never built with ducts, additions and converted attics or garages the main system can’t reach, bonus rooms and finished basements that run hot or cold, and homes where one thermostat for the whole house means constant thermostat wars. Mini-splits also work well as a complement — say, a bedroom wing that needs its own temperature while the main system handles the rest. If any room in your house has a space heater or a window AC compensating for the main system, that’s a ductless candidate.
How They Work
A mini-split has an outdoor unit connected to one or more indoor heads by a small line set — no ductwork, just a three-inch opening in the wall. Each indoor head controls its own zone, so the bedroom can be 68 while the living room is 72, and you’re not paying to condition empty rooms. As heat pumps, they move heat rather than making it: in summer they pull heat out of the house, in winter they pull heat from the outside air. Cold-climate models are designed to keep working through real New Jersey winters, so this isn’t the heat-pump technology your grandfather complained about.
What Installation Involves
Most single-zone installations take a day; multi-zone systems can take two. We mount the indoor head(s), set the outdoor unit on a pad or wall bracket with proper clearance, run the line set and condensate drain, make the electrical connections, pressure-test and charge the system, and walk you through the remote controls and filter cleaning — a five-minute task. No tearing open walls or ductwork fabrication.
Zoned Comfort, Lower Waste
Because each zone runs independently, you’re not heating and cooling the whole house to satisfy one room. Bedrooms can run cooler at night while the rest of the house idles. An unused guest room doesn’t need conditioning at all. That zoning is where the real-world efficiency comes from — less about the equipment rating, more about not conditioning space nobody’s using.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do heat pumps really work in New Jersey winters? Yes — modern cold-climate heat pumps are engineered for exactly this region and keep heating well below freezing. We’ll size the system for your home’s actual heating load so you’re not left short on the coldest nights.
How many rooms can one system handle? One outdoor unit can typically serve up to four or five indoor zones, depending on the equipment and your home’s layout. During a quote we’ll map out which rooms become zones and what that takes.
Do I need any ductwork at all? No. That’s the point — the indoor heads connect directly to the outdoor unit through a small line set. Homes without ducts are ideal candidates.
Are they noisy? Indoor heads are among the quietest heating and cooling equipment made — typically quieter than a window AC or a forced-air register. The outdoor unit makes a low hum comparable to a standard condenser.
