Air Conditioning Installation & Replacement

Replacing an air conditioner is one of the bigger home investments you’ll make, and the difference between a good install and a bad one shows up in your comfort and your electric bill for the next 15 years. AGR HVAC installs residential cooling systems across Morris, Sussex, Warren, Passaic, and Essex counties — sized right, installed cleanly, and explained without jargon.

When Replacement Makes More Sense Than Repair

Repair is the right call when the system is relatively young and the fix is straightforward. Replacement starts winning when several of these are true: the system is 12–15 years old or more, breakdowns are getting frequent, it still uses phased-out R-22 refrigerant, some rooms never cool properly no matter what, or your summer electric bills keep climbing. If you’re facing a major repair on an aging unit — a compressor or a coil — the money is usually better put toward a new system. We’ll lay out both options honestly so you can decide.

Sizing Matters More Than Brand

The most common installation mistake isn’t the equipment — it’s the size. An oversized AC cools the air too fast, shuts off before it dehumidifies, and short-cycles itself into an early grave. An undersized one runs constantly and never quite catches up on hot days. Proper sizing accounts for your home’s square footage, insulation, windows, and layout — not just the tonnage of the unit being replaced. We size every installation to the house, not to a rule of thumb.

What Efficiency Ratings Mean for You

New air conditioners carry a SEER2 rating — basically, cooling output per unit of electricity. Higher SEER2 means lower running costs, but the most efficient unit on the shelf isn’t automatically the best value for every home. We’ll explain what the ratings mean in dollars-and-cents terms for your house and usage, so you’re choosing based on payback, not brochures.

What Installation Day Looks Like

A standard replacement typically takes a day. We protect your floors and work areas, remove the old equipment and take it with us, set the new condenser and air handler or coil, connect refrigerant lines and electrical, check the existing ductwork for leaks or restrictions that would undermine the new system, charge and test the system, and walk you through the new thermostat and filter locations before we leave. You should never be left guessing how anything works.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does AC installation take? Most straightforward replacements are done in a day. If ductwork modifications or electrical upgrades are needed, we’ll tell you upfront how that affects the timeline.

What size air conditioner do I need? It depends on your home — square footage, insulation, window area, and layout all factor in. We calculate it for your specific house rather than guessing from the old unit’s size.

Will I need new ductwork too? Not necessarily. We inspect your existing ducts during the quote. If they’re in good shape and sized right, they stay. If they’re leaking badly or choking airflow, we’ll show you what we found and what fixing it would involve.

What happens to my old equipment? We remove it and take it with us when the new system goes in.
